Bravery Trust Director Steve Patrick shed light on the challenges Australian Defence Force members face transitioning out of service.

“There are about 6000 ADF members who transition out of defence every year, the majority of those making the transition successfully and without any issues,” he told Sky News Australia.

“One is the unexpected transition … all of a sudden, they’re out of an environment which they are used to and comfortable in, and they have to make a transition into civilian life, potentially with an injury, so they’re behind already.”

The second category of concern, as Patrick explained, is the knowledge gap experienced by young servicemen and women: “For a lot of servicemen and women, like myself, who joined it at a young age… I never had to get a Medicare card or do many of those things required in everyday life when the transition happens.”
