“Bravery Trust enabled our family to create treasured memories with mum. I cannot thank them enough.’’
Kerry Speelman received a phone call no daughter wants. Her mother Joan had been given bad cancer news.
She desperately needed to see her mum, but she lives with her partner and four children in Darwin and her mum lives in Wollongong and she couldn’t afford the plane tickets.
Kerry has been an Able Seaman on HMAS Melbourne, including deployment to East Timor, and she sustained spinal injuries.
“We were struggling a bit at the time and I didn’t know how I was going to find the money to even get me down to see Mum, let alone the kids. I really wanted them to see Mum,’’ Kerry says.
Bravery Trust heard of Kerry’s predicament and stepped in to assist with the flights and accommodation for Kerry, her partner and the children so they could spend some special family time with their grandmother.
“It’s something that I will never forget,’’ said Kerry. “They just took away all the extra stress I had about whether I could see Mum.
